Dental crowns are prescribed to protect weak teeth. When a tooth has a very large cavity, existing old restoration, or other damage that cannot simply be repaired by just a filling, a crown is needed to provide better protection. For instance, many people have unexplained pain on filled back teeth, which is usually due to small fractures in the chewing portion of the teeth. Applying a crown on these teeth relieves the pain and restores the functions. In the front teeth, old fillings can not only weaken the teeth but also affect the aesthetic appearance of these teeth. Crowns can be used to prevent breakage, further weakening, and staining.
There are many materials we can use to fabricate the crown. We can use all porcelain, gold, other precious metal, or a combination of each. With proper care, these restorations can last for 20 to 30 years.
How many appointments are needed?
At least two appointments are needed to fit a dental crown. During the first appointment, Dr. Yu will remove the decay and any damaged tooth portion, then the tooth is rebuilt and shaped to create the proper form for the crown material. Then a temporary crown will be fitted onto your tooth. Two weeks later, you will return to our office for the crown seating appointment. At that time, Dr. Yu will ensure the proper fit and function of your final crown before she permanently cements it onto your tooth.
What are porcelain veneers?
Porcelain veneers are made of very thin layers of ceramic that are glued directly onto the front of the teeth. They are an ideal choice to improve your smile because of their natural appearance and resistance to staining from food and drink. Although making custom veneers requires a high degree of technical skill as well as attention to cosmetic detail, Dr. Yu and her team will make sure that each case is methodically designed and executed specifically to enhance each individual patient’s smile.
Will porcelain veneers look natural?
Ultra-thin porcelain veneers are practical when they are attached to the teeth. In addition, they are highly resistant to coffee, tea, and even cigarette stains. Veneers improve the strength and appearance of your teeth, and veneers' resemblance to healthy, white tooth enamel is unsurpassed by other restorative alternatives.
Are porcelain veneers durable?
Dr. Dr. Zhichun (April) Yu will make certain that your veneers are fabricated from the highest quality porcelains and are bonded with the most cutting-edge and sturdiest materials available.
Avoid using your veneers as tools, and wear a night guard to help prolong their life. If, unfortunately, an accidental breakage or damage occurs, it is possible to replace the damaged veneer.
